ANNUAL RALLYING DAY FOR AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS
As many as 15 million youth in the U.S. have no place to go when
the school day ends. The hours after school are full of possibilities
for young people to get involved in risky, dangerous behavior, so
it's important for youth to have safe place to go when the bell
rings so they can engage in healthy, positive, fun activities. To
that end, there's an annual rallying day for afterschool programs
called Lights on Afterschool! This year's event is on October 9.
On that day, thousands of afterschool programs across the country
will hold rallies to let people know that afterschool programs are
vital supports for children and families. For more information or
to register your event and receive a free planning kit, visit
www.afterschoolalliance.org/loa_2003/index.cfm.

MID-SOUTH FAIR SPEAKING AND CAREER PURSUIT
ENTRIES DUE SOON
Please remember tapes and resumes for the Mid-South Fair Agribusiness/4-H
Public Speaking Contest and the Mid-South Fair 4-H Career Pursuit
activity are due in the state 4-H office by August 15. The following
URL’s will give you information on these events:
This is a great opportunity for 4-H members enrolled in the public
speaking project or for any 4-H member with an interest in developing
workforce skills. We will select four finalists to represent our
state in the junior division and three finalists in the senior division
for the Agribusiness/4-H Public Speaking Contest. Three finalists
who are senior 4-H members will be selected for the Career Pursuit
activity. Each contest offers a $300 first place award, $200 second
place award and a $100 third place award. Last year Tennessee 4-H’ers
won eight of the nine awards offered in these events and brought
back $1700 in prize money. Please encourage your 4-H members who
are interested.

ROCK EAGLE REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED
Several calls have come in to the state 4-H office regarding registration
materials for Rock Eagle. The original deadline to submit registration
materials was August 1st. To help ensure Tennessee has a large delegation
in attendance, I have worked out an agreement to extend the registration
deadline to August 8th. This means all materials must be in the
state 4-H office by this date.
Please use this time to recruit additional volunteers and staff
to attend. You may download the registration form at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/ideas03/attach/SRLFRegForm.pdf.
If you have questions regarding the Southern Region Volunteer Leader
Forum, please contact me at 865-974-2128. See you in Georgia!
