AWARDS AND RECOGNITION IDEAS FROM MADISON COUNTY
(Taken from: TAE4-HW Headlines, Volume 3:1, December, 2003)

Here are some awards and recognition ideas that we use in Madison County with our clubs and 4-H members:

* For the club contests each month, we order the ribbons from Hodges Badge Company and use the ribbons on the roll that you cut. For the county contests, we use the larger rosette ribbons and trophies for the 4th-6th grade; plaques for the 7th-8th grade; and a sliver piece (trays, picture frames, baskets, serving pieces, and also some key chains, 4-H memorabilia, etc) for the 9th through 12th grade. Hopefully they will remember where they received this piece when they are on their own and have fond memories of 4-H and also find them useful. Some of our senior member 4-H’ers have received lots of trophies and plaques so we wanted them to have something useful when they were an adult. For the 4-Hers who have stayed in 4-H all the way through the 12th grade, we have a senior picnic and give the graduates a trunk to hold their 4-H mementos, etc. This is also to help them in their adult life as a coffee table, chest, etc.
* We give an Outstanding Club-of-the-Year award. This is determined through points they receive each month for contests, participation, wearing green and white or clovers during the meeting, project books and officer training meeting. We also recognize Outstanding Service Learning Clubs-of-the-Year based on reports submitted on their activity in service learning throughout the year. Volunteer leaders judge the entries. We give the two top clubs-of-the-year in each grade, a trophy for the teacher and a pizza party for the club members. The top five finalists in each grade receive a smaller trophy for the teacher and a ice cream/Popsicle party.
* We hold a retreat in Gatlinburg (3 nights/4 days) for any junior high or senior
4-H’er who submits a record book for district or state competition. They are also required to work a minimum of 10 hours at our annual fund raiser, the 4-H Chicken Shack. Madison County 4-H pays for one meal a day, an outing to the Dixie Stampede, the chalet and transportation.
* Madison County 4-H pays for State 4-H Congress, Washington Citizenship Focus and 4-H Electric Camp when requirements are met such as working at the 4-H fund-raiser, entering a record book, participating in service learning activities, conducting project group meetings, assisting with the county contests, etc. We feel like this helps to have a stronger overall program and each activity builds on the next level of achievement. By giving them incentives to work toward we are helping them with funding and achieving higher accomplishments that some would be able to achieve on their own.

HIGHLIGHT PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS WITH A COUNTY AWARDS BANQUET

Many counties recognize their 4-H members, volunteer leaders and donors at a countywide. County awards banquets offer the opportunity for you to highlight your program accomplishments while recognizing the 4-H’ers in front of their family and peers. Here are some awards banquet ideas taken from the TAE4-HW Headlines (Volume 3:1), December, 2003.

Henry County

Henry County has an awards program each June. We invite all county winners for each of the contest, record book winners and judging team participants. The Honor Club helps with decorations and many have a part on the program. We also invite the county commission, ag advisory council, Farm Bureau, district staff, all sponsors and many, many volunteer leaders. We recognize all special guests, sponsors and volunteer leaders with a token of our appreciation.

We also give an engraved silver tray to the "4-H Family of the Year", plaques to two "Friends of 4-H," three alumni awards, a silver tray to one outstanding senior and an "Outstanding Service to 4-H" award. All county contest winners and alternates receive trophies. We also give medals to 6th grade superstars and also recognize new Honor Club members with Honor Club pins and certificates. Seniors are also recognized with a 4-H gift.

Farm Bureau pays for all 4-H members and volunteer leader meals. Parents pay for their own. We have sponsors for each contest that pay for all trophies. We have a nice meal and the awards program is something that 4-H members look forward to each year!

Rutherford County

The theme for our banquet was "Discover Treasure in 4-H." A banner was made to go over the head table with a green background, yellow letters and a large treasure chest on it. Each table had a gold treasure chest with beads, gems and green clover coins spilling out of it as a centerpiece. The 4-H’ers were allowed to take a clover coin home as a souvenir. The treasure chests and coins were bought from the Oriental Trading catalog and decorated by myself and some 4-Hers. They could be used again with a compass lesson at a summer day camp.

Hardeman County

In Hardeman County, we hold our awards banquet in February. We have 4-H'ers bake or bring cookies, brownies, etc. We have soft drinks to go with them. We have several local sponsors that help out every year to cover costs of 4-H medals, drinks, decorations, etc. The event theme and programs are planned and implemented by senior 4-H'ers. 4-H'ers provide the entertainment, pledges, flag ceremony, etc. We recognize 4-H'ers for their success in judging teams, public speaking, posters, project work and citizenship/leadership work. We also conduct our Honor Club initiation at this time.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Success... has nothing to do with what you gain... or accomplish for yourself. It’s what you do for others.
