4-H ENROLLMENT UPDATE: MORE FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS???
Where do I put classroom embryology projects, farm days,
outdoor classrooms?
| The definition for school enrichment says that these youth
are receiving a sequence of learning experiences in cooperation
with school officials during school hours to support the school
curriculum and involves direct teaching by Extension staff or
trained volunteers, including teachers. Is your farm day only
one day? Give additional resources to the teachers for a prelude
or follow-up to your farm day and you have a sequence of learning
experiences. |

DO COUNTY PROGRAMS STILL BENEFIT FROM AG
TAG PURCHASES?
With the end of the Ag Tag County 4-H Endowment Initiative last
year, many people are wondering if county 4-H members continue to
benefit from Ag Tag sales. The answer is a resounding "YES!!"
Last year, 4-H received $55,000 from proceeds of the Ag Tag sales.
These funds supported the Junior Livestock Expos, Tennessee 4-H
Roundup, Tennessee 4-H Congress, trips to National Congress, and
awards programs in 10 ag-related 4-H projects. This year's proposal
to the Department of Agriculture is for another $55,000 to fund
these same educational events and activities.
Do county programs benefit from this, even though the money is
no longer going into county 4-H endowment accounts? Yes! These state
level events and activities support the leadership, citizenship
and other ag-related projects in which county 4-H members are involved.
In addition to supporting 4-H, Ag Tag dollars also go to FFA, Ag-in-the-Classroom
and a host of other agricultural development projects. I hope you
will join me in continuing to renew your Ag Tags and encouraging
others to do the same.

GET CASH FOR 4-H COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS!
(Source: Clover Corner News)
The deadline for 4-H clubs community service projects to be eligible
for the 31st Colgate Youth for America Campaign has been extended
to April 15, 2004. Youth for America is a chance for 4-H clubs to
win up to $2,000 each for their most creative and best-executed
community service projects.
So, now 4-H club community service programs running between March
1, 2003, and April 15, 2004, are eligible to win one of more than
350 cash awards. Entries still must be postmarked by April 30, 2004.
The extended deadlines supercede the dates on the current entry
forms, which are available from from county 4-H agents, at www.youthforamerica.com,
or by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Colgate Youth
for America Campaign, P.O. Box 1058, FDR Station, New York, NY 10150-1058.
2003 local 4-H winners included a club from Ohio that instituted
and taught court-ordered safe driving classes to teens who received
traffic tickets; a Georgia club that created a beauty pageant for
residents of a nursing home; and a California club that collected
and distributed clothes, food, personal care items and bus tokens
to homeless teens.
To date, Colgate-Palmolive has awarded nearly $6 million to America’s
children through Colgate Youth for America. The campaign, initiated
in 1972 to encourage social responsibility, is now the longest-running
corporate-sponsored program for young people.
Entry forms are now available from county 4-H agents, at www.youthforamerica.com,
or by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Colgate Youth
for America Campaign, P.O. Box 1058, FDR Station, New York, NY 10150-1058.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
When things are bad, we take comfort in the thought that they could
always be worse. And when they are, we find hope in the thought
that things are so bad they have to get better.
