2004 EXPO ONLINE ENTRY PROGRAM NOW AVAILABLE

The 2004 Expo online entry program is now available. It is still required that you submit all Expo paper entries, entry fees and were appropriate registration forms and/or lease agreements to Dr. James B. Neel in the Extension animal science office by June 15. However, individual counties are now responsible for entering registrant information via an online entry system for both district and state entries. For entries that are district only, the yellow entry forms should be sent to your district agriculture program leader. Please send the white copy to Knoxville clearly indicating on the entry form that it is a 'District Only' entry. You will enter the district only animals via the computer the same as state entries, however, we will indicate in our database records that the animal is “district only.” Remember that once the decision is made to show in the district only, the animal cannot be shown at the state Expo.

All entries are required to be completely entered into the online system by Monday, June 28. Before entering exhibitor or animal information, verify that data on the entry form is complete and animals meet eligibility guidelines. Do not attempt to enter incomplete entries! All information fields are required and the entry program will not accept partial entries.

Instructions and helpful hints for making entries into the program are provided on the site. Please read the instructions thoroughly before beginning and print a copy for your reference.

You may access the program from the Department of Animal Science home page (http://animalscience.ag.utk.edu/) by clicking on 'Expo On-line Entry Program' under the 4-H link, News and Events heading or by the direct link below. Be sure to open this link directly in Internet Explorer and not through your Lotus Notes account. Do not use Netscape to access the program.

Thank you in advance for helping keep the entry process for the 2004 Tennessee Junior Livestock Exposition as error free as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me at etipton.utk.edu.

ACADEMIC CONFERENCE SERVICE AFTERNOON A SUCCESS!

On June 17, 105 junior high 4-H’ers spent an entire afternoon volunteering with nine agencies throughout Knoxville. Their service experiences included things such as assisting with exotic plant control, working in greenhouses, sorting donated clothes, visiting nursing home residents, and much more.

Many of the 4-H’ers reported learning valuable things through their service experience. A volunteer at Beardsley Community Farm said, “The most rewarding part of the project is knowing I helped someone and that I could’ve changed someone’s life today.” A 4-H’er who visited a nursing home said, “Seniors like company. I liked making the seniors smile.” Others reported learning about the work of inner-city ministries, Goodwill, and other community agencies. One young person summed up the experience this way:

“I learned that by helping others, you help make a better community to live in.”

A special “thank you” goes to the many Extension staff and adult leaders who facilitated the service learning projects. Their assistance helped make the afternoon a true success!
