4-H ALL STARS SHINE AT ROUNDUP
4-H Roundup and State All Star Conference provided several opportunities
for All Stars to fulfill the organization’s motto - “Service” -
and to be recognized for their efforts throughout the past year.
On Monday afternoon, all Roundup delegates donated items for foster
children who are transitioning into independence. Collected items
included kitchen towels, baby clothes, mops, and laundry detergent.
On Tuesday, All Stars who were not involved in project competition
volunteered with seven agencies throughout Knoxville. They worked
at sites such as schools, the Salvation Army and the Ronald McDonald
House.
Several All Star awards were presented at the Thursday afternoon
assembly. They were as follows:

4-H HAS GONE HIGH TECH
4-H is typically thought of as agriculture and family and consumer
sciences activities. However, there were over 300 people in St.
Louis, Missouri July 24-28, 2004, proving that misconception wrong.
Washington University in St. Louis was the home to the 2004 4-H
Technology Leadership Conference.
During this conference delegates from as far away as Korea and
Japan met to discuss how 4-H members can become more involved in
technology related activities. 4-H’ers choose a track to
participate in. The available tracks were robotics, aerospace,
e-government, getting 4-H on the Web, digital photography, digital
audio and video,
GPS/ GIS and event technology. Approximately 10
hours were spent in the track sessions and most tracks included
a field trip.
On Sunday, all 300 delegates participated in a service project
to assist the City of St. Louis map Forest Park. Forest Park is
one of the largest urban parks in the country - more than 500 acres
larger than Central Park in New York City. Delegates recorded information
about all of the signs in the park, including their coordinates
marked with a GPS (Global Positioning System). A very useful map
was produced with the data collected.
One of the favorite activities was Geocaching. Geocaching is an
entertaining adventure game for GPS users. Participants learn how
to use a GPS and get to explore interesting sites they otherwise
would not discover otherwise. Geocaching is a high tech game of
hide and go seek. The Tennessee delegates spent their free time
geocaching. (See attached photo DSCF0292.JPG:
John Avrit and Brad Anderson entering data from the service project
at Forest Park.)
Tennessee delegates were selected based on their technology experience
and leadership skills. The Tennessee delegation included Brad Anderson,
Coffee County; John Avrit, Cheatham County; Jordan Flanders; Robertson
County; Amanda Hendrix, Henry County; Bailey Mayes, Robertson County;
Jared Pickens, Wilson County; and PJ Shrader, Coffee County. John
Toman, UTIA Information Technology and Sierra Ham, Cheatham County
Extension agent attended as chaperones.
The Tennessee group is very motivated to use what they learned.
Big plans are being made to implement a similar service project
and form an official 4-H Tech Team from Tennessee.

APPLY TO BE THE SERVICE LEARNING DELEGATE TO NATIONAL CONGRESS
Tennessee 4-H Youth Development is pleased to announce another
opportunity for an outstanding 4-H’er to be recognized for
his/her service to the community. One Level II 4-H’er will
be selected as the state winner in service learning and a delegate
to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia. Applications are
due to the state 4-H office by September 1, 2004.
The application and selection process is as follows:
| * |
Any Level II 4-H’er (in 11th or 12th grade as of January
1, 2004) who has not previously attended National 4-H Congress
may submit a 4-H Service Learning Portfolio to the state 4-H
office no later than September 1, 2004. Download a copy of
the portfolio from the 4-H Web site at www.utextension.utk.edu/4h/forms/acrobat/sosncong.pdf. |
| * |
A panel of judges will review the portfolios and select five
(5) finalists to participate in a phone interview, if necessary. |
| * |
After the interviews, one (1) 4-H’er will be named
as a service delegate to National 4-H Congress. |
Notes:
| * |
This contest is open to all eligible 4-H’ers. Selection
is based solely on service learning activity. |
| * |
Portfolios should reflect both the service and what the 4-H’er
learned from the experience. |
| * |
The 4-H’er should attach examples of reflection activities
and recognition/beneficiary response and must attach his/her “service
learning story” and pictures. |

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE RELEASES NEW AG TAG PROMOTIONAL BROCHURE
As you know, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture has been
extremely generous to Extension, 4-H, FFA and Ag-in-the-Classroom
with the proceeds from the agricultural specialty license plate.
4-H will receive $55,000 this fiscal year in support of state and
district junior livestock shows, Tennessee 4-H Congress, Tennessee
4-H Roundup and 4-H volunteerism programs. In order to continue
this support, TDA needs us to buy and promote the Ag Tag.
A new Ag Tag promotional brochure has been developed and printed
by TDA for this purpose. The Tennessee 4-H Foundation will be sending
each county Extension office 25 copies of the brochure in the next
mail packet. Please use these to promote Ag Tag purchases. If you
would like additional copies of the brochure for meetings or special
programs you are conducting, please contact Mark Gateley in the
state 4-H office two weeks prior to your event or promotion. Mark
may be reached at mgateley@utk.edu.
The brochure is also available on the Foundation Web site at www.utextension.utk.edu/tn4hfoundation.
Thank you for purchasing or renewing an Ag Tag this year!

GIVING & VOLUNTEERING IN THE USA: VOLUNTEERING ACROSS
THE LIFESPAN
(Source: Reinventing Aging: Baby Boomers and Civic
Engagement, 2004)
Contrary to conventional wisdom, more people volunteer in mid-life
than in retirement. Conventional wisdom holds that individuals
volunteer in greater numbers and with greater frequency after they
retire, when they have time on their hands. This is only partially
correct. As a general rule, the percentage of people who volunteer
reaches a peak in mid-life - not in retirement - and then gradually
declines. Volunteering in this peak period is associated with having
more, rather than fewer, obligations and commitments. On the other
hand, individuals who do volunteer during their early years of
retirement do so with greater frequency than mid-life volunteers.
Indeed, boomers' parents show an additional peak of volunteer activity
in their 70's, although this late peak was not observed in the
preceding generation and may reflect the Greatest Generation's
exceptional civic behavior.

MID-SOUTH FAIR SPEAKING AND CAREER PURSUIT ENTRIES DUE SOON
Please remember tapes and resumes for the Mid-South Fair Agribusiness/4-H
Public Speaking Contest and the Mid-South Fair 4-H Career Pursuit
activity are due in the state 4-H office by August 13. The following
URL’s will give you information on these events.
The information can also be downloaded in PDF format.
This is a great opportunity for 4-H members enrolled in the public
speaking project or for any 4-H member with an interest in developing
workforce skills. We will select four finalists to represent our
state in the junior division and three finalists in the senior
division for the Agribusiness/4-H Public Speaking Contest. Three
finalists who are senior 4-H members will be selected for the Career
Pursuit activity. Each contest offers a $300 first place award,
$200 second place award and a $100 third place award. Last year
Tennessee 4-H’ers won five of the nine awards offered in
these events. Please encourage your 4-H members who are interested.

NEED A ONE-DAY FUNDRAISER?
Matt Enterprises, Inc. (the 4-H gumball people) have received
approval for 4-H groups to sell 4-H gumballs at Wal-Mart Stores.
4-H groups who have done this in other states have done well. If
your Honor Club or other 4-H group needs to raise some quick cash,
organize some volunteers, have the volunteers organize some young
people, call your local Wal-Mart Store manager and order gumballs
from Matt Enterprises. Schedule your "gumball day" at
least two weeks out, to give Matt Enterprises time to ship gumballs
to you.
A case of gumballs (100 cellophane packages with 6 gumballs per
package) is $44.00. Each pack of gumballs may be sold for $1.00,
netting your 4-H club $56.00 per case. On a busy Saturday, several
cases may be sold. (Remember, it is better to sell out than to
have product left over.)
For more information, visit the Matt Enterprises website at www.4hpride.com/about.asp.
You can also order gumballs over the Web site.

PHOTO HIGHLIGHTS FROM 4-H ROUNDUP
The 4-H tech team did an excellent job documenting State 4-H Roundup.
These
4-H’ers produced a multi-media show highlighting the
week’s activities. They also posted pictures on the Web site
which may be viewed at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/roundup/2004/.
A special thanks goes to John Toman and Carlos Parrilla for their
guidance and expertise in working with this special group of 4-H’ers.
Additionally, state project winners photos are posted at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/roundup/projcomp/winners04.htm.
The Vol State recipients may be seen at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/roundup/volstate/members04.htm.
