4-H ENROLLMENT: 2004 WRAP UP AND ROLLOVER DIRECTIONS

The federal enrollment report is nearly completed; and it’s time to update records and enroll your new 4-H’ers. Twenty-four counties sent the wrong files, sent blank files or sent electronic information that did not match the paper copy of the CES-237 report. If you were one of those counties, please make a note of it so that you don’t get that dreaded phone call or email again next year.

Many counties did an excellent job of reporting the scope of the county 4-H program and their report reflects the extra effort put into accurately reporting. Congratulations and thanks to the following counties for a job well done!

Western - Dickson, Gibson, Hardeman, Henderson, Hickman, Montgomery, Stewart and Shelby

Central - Bedford, Cheatham, Grundy, Jackson, Lincoln, Robertson, Rutherford, Smith and Warren

Eastern - Anderson, Carter, Cocke, Cumberland, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Knox, Morgan, Polk, Roane, Sevier and Sullivan

Rollover directions can be found on the 4-H enrollment Web site. Please read the directions carefully and follow ALL steps as they are given. There are changes to projects codes and regions that must be taken care of first, before any new data is added. The link to the Blue Ribbon Web site is:

www.utextension.utk.edu/4h/blueribbon

If you have problems understanding or following the directions, contact your regional
IT Specialist.

The pages were developed by Samantha Bernard (dairy) and Darrell Hale (citizenship), in conjunction with specialists, the state 4-H staff, and Marketing and Communications Services.

To access the activity sheets, visit the 4-H projects page (www.utextension.utk.edu/4h/projects/index.htm) and click on the project name or follow through the links below:

HARDEMAN COUNTY 4-H’ER FEATURED IN NASCO CATALOGUE

Asa Black, an 8th grade Hardeman County 4-H member, was recently featured in the fall 2004 issue of the "Nasco: To-Sew" catalog. Asa was an honorable mention winner in Nasco's Design-A-Pillow Contest this past year. He designed a "Slider Turtle" pillow. Both he and his pillow made the company's most recent catalog in the cartoon pillow section. Asa received a $50.00 Nasco gift certificate for his efforts. The turtle pillow is also on the Nasco contest Web site at www.to-sew.com/cfusion/contest.cfm. Congratulations to Asa for this recognition!

TARGETING POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES

Exploring the Life Skill of Healthy Lifestyle Choices
The life skill of healthy lifestyle choices involves attitudes, skills and behaviors critical for maintaining optimal physical and emotional well-being. It is one of the broadest life skills to address. The instrument used to evaluate programming in this area is divided into sub-scales of nutrition, exercise, food safety, disease prevention, personal safety, home safety and emotional health. Because the healthy lifestyle focus generally involves making informed choices, the decision-making sub-scale complements evaluation efforts in this area. It’s important to remember that a Form B must be submitted to the University of Tennessee Institutional Review Board and approved before evaluating programs asking questions aimed at preventing alcohol, tobacco and substance abuse or sex before marriage. Information on completing a Form B can be found on the LSES Web site.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices and County 4-H Programs
Addressing healthy lifestyle choices is an issue likely to be identified by advisory committees and focus groups as an area of community concern. It is important to select a specific area of emphasis such as nutrition or home safety rather than trying to cover all areas at once. Addressing several broad topics often results in limited impact because efforts are too fragmented. Social service agencies are especially helpful in providing benchmark data and educational materials. One source of excellent curriculum materials is: http://www.cyfernet.org/ located on the USDA site.

TENNESSEE DELEGATION TO NATIONAL 4-H CONGRESS

Tennessee will be represented by 37 young people from across the state at the National 4-H Congress, November 26-30, in Atlanta, Georgia. The 2004 delegation is anxiously awaiting the "Congress experience." They will participate in a program that includes a visit to Olympic Park, the Coca-Cola Museum and Underground Atlanta. Delegates will see the Carter Center and the Martin Luther King Center, attend a cultural event and tour other sites of interest. They will complete service projects benefitting the Atlanta community and be honored by past Tennessee Congress delegates with a luncheon at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Tennessee’s delegates to National 4-H Congress were selected as senior level II project winners during the 82nd annual Tennessee 4-H Roundup this summer at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. You can see the Tennessee delegation and read a brief bio of their project accomplishments at www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/natcong/.
