BENTON SISTERS INJURED IN LONDON BLAST

Katie and Emily Benton, former Knox County 4-H’ers, were among the hundreds injured by the terrorist bombings in London on July 7. Katie, 21, and Emily, 20, are in a London hospital and expected to recover. Katie has shrapnel wounds to her leg, back and neck. Emily’s injuries to her feet and arm required surgery. She also suffered some broken bones and will need additional surgery in the future. The young women were in England for a summer holiday.

Both Katie and Emily were active 4-H members. Katie attended National 4-H Congress as a state winner in veterinary science and was a member of State 4-H Council. Emily was very involved in the clothing project and was high individual in the state 4-H clothing judging competition. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Katie, Emily and their family.

STORY ON OMK CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS AIRED

This year 27 youth from military families received scholarships to attend 4-H camps across the state. To qualify for these scholarships, each child had to have one parent or guardian currently deployed. The OMK grant provided for 15 scholarships. After reviewing the applications, the selection committee decided all the applicants deserved to go to camp. Thanks to some very generous donors, all of the applicants were awarded scholarships!

Last week, a news story about the OMK camp scholarships aired across the state. This story featured Allison and Don Joe Fowler, two of the scholarship recipients. If you would like to view this story, please go to www.agriculture.utk.edu/news/VideoReleases/.
