CALL FOR 4-H ACTIVITY SHEETS

This is a reminder to encourage agents or volunteers who are interested in creating activity sheets. We are accepting the activity sheets for review. Most of the projects have a beginning and some supplemental activity sheets. However, we need beginning activity sheets for beef, sheep, swine and food science. We do not have intermediate or advanced level activity sheets for any of the projects.

We have a process in place where the activity sheets are reviewed by a subject matter specialist and then by at least one member of the state 4-H staff and Wanda Russell in Marketing and Communications who assigns a Web publication number. Amy Willis, Extension program assistant, 4-H Youth Development is responsible for reviewing and posting the activity sheets on the Web site.

We can have more than one activity sheet for each project and for each level. The activity sheets can supplement any curriculum you may use, including 4-HCCS materials. They can also be used as documentation in the 4-H project achievement portfolio. Agents who create activity sheets and have them published on the Web can use this as part of their promotion dossier.

All information regarding the activity sheets including the template used to write them is on the Tennessee 4-H Web site. The link for the activity sheets and templates is 4h.tennessee.edu/projects/actsheets.htm. Please email activity sheets that need to be reviewed to Amy Willis at awillis2@utk.edu and to Alice Ann Moore at aamoore@utk.edu.

CARTER COUNTY PLACES 7TH IN NATIONAL 4-H FORESTRY INVITATIONAL

Carter County’s 4-H forestry judging team represented Tennessee a the National 4-H Forestry Invitational held at Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Conference Center near Weston, West Virginia on July 24-28. The team included David Barlow, Nita Blackmon, Dustin Miller and Jonathon Scalf and was coached by Larry Nave and Buddy Farmer, Carter County 4-H volunteers.

During the event, members compete for the overall team and individual awards in several areas... a written general knowledge exam; tree identification; topographic maps and compass reading; compass and pacing; forest insect and disease identification; forest site evaluation; and Forestry Quiz Bowl. The team this year made it to the second round of the Quiz Bowl competition. Team members also competed in a crosscut sawing contest, pulp wood tossing contest and log rolling contest, all of which were forestry skill fun competitions.

Team members experienced several educational programs throughout the week including a program on “Night Sounds of the Appalachians,” “Snakes of West Virginia” and “Birds of Prey.”

The national event was sponsored by International Paper Company Foundation. Additionally, the Tennessee team was supported by various forestry industries and individuals through the Tennessee 4-H Foundation, Inc.

Kristin Kemesrud, a member of the K.W. Hustlers 4-H Club in Clarke County, Iowa, wrote to the state 4-H office recently. Her contact information is as follows.

Kristin Klemesrud
1110 S. Kossuth Street
Osceola, Iowa 50213-1700
