Fourth grade 4-H'ers get ready to bake! It is time for 4th graders to enter a recipe in the National 4-H Cornbread Cook-Off sponsored by Martha White and Lodge Cast Iron. Past winning recipes have been unique, creative and of course very tasty. Entries have included cornbread to appeal to everyone's taste from Papaw's Cornbread Pudding to Hot and Spicy Cornbread Casserole. Last year's winning recipe was Cheesy Corny Cornbread prepared by Kinzee Clark from Kingston, Tennessee and her twin sister Linzee Clark placed second with her Broccoli Cheese Cornbread.

Enter today by sending in an original recipe. Each recipe must be cooked in Lodge cast iron and prepared with at least one cup of Martha White corn meal or one package of Martha White corn meal mix. Recipes will be judged and ten lucky finalists will be invited to prepare their recipe at the National Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburg, Tennessee on April 26, 2008.

The first place winner of the 4-H Cook-off will win $400 cash prize. The 4-H teacher and 4-H agent of the winning student will also each receive $50.

The second prize winner takes home $200 and the third place contestant will receive $100. The remaining seven finalists each will win $50 and all ten finalists receive special gifts from Martha White and Lodge Cast Iron. DYER COUNTY LIVESTOCK TEAM COMPETES IN NATIONAL WESTERN

Dyer County livestock teamOn Tuesday, January 8, 2008, the Dyer County 4-H livestock judging team traveled to Denver, Colorado, to compete in the National Western Round-up 4-H Livestock Judging Contest. Team members were Todd Baker, Anna Brown, Kris Newsom and John Schultz. Traveling with the team as volunteer leaders were Calli Smithson and Clint Bain.

After arriving in Denver, the team members traveled to a work out session at Magness Land and Cattle Company. While there, students toured the ranch and evaluated six classes of Limousin heifers and bulls. On Thursday morning, the students took a break from judging and boarded a bus for Winter Park, Colorado. There the students experienced a full day of skiing on some of the best snow in the world.

On Friday, the team traveled to the Colorado State University Equine Center in Fort Collins for a morning workout session that involved six classes of swine, cattle and sheep. They then traveled to Brighton, Colorado, and visited Ritchey Show Goats where the team evaluated and judged four classes of Boer and Boer-cross wether dams.

On Saturday, the team competed in the judging contest. During the contest, the teams evaluated 10 classes of livestock and gave six sets of oral reasons. There were 24 teams competing in the contest, which included one team from Canada. The Dyer County team placed 11th overall, and were 6th in goats, 7th in cattle and 10th in reasons. Kris Newsom was 18th high individual and John Shultz was 19th high individual in the overall contest.

The team and I would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers and parents who made this trip possible. It was truly a great experience for each member of the team.

JUNIOR HIGH ACADEMIC CONFERENCE OFFERINGS FOR 2008

The 2008 Junior High Academic Conference is scheduled for June 10-13 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This year’s conference will again feature 15 subject matter areas... beef, cat, consumer education, dairy, dairy foods/food-nutrition, dog, garden/home horticulture, horse, line and design, petroleum power, plant science, poultry, sheep, swine and veterinary science.

Here are some things to consider as you work with your junior high members in preparation for Academic Conference:

1. A total of ten delegates in each subject matter area will be selected to attend on the basis of an application form available from the county Extension office. (Each of the three regions will select three delegates per subject matter area. The other delegate per project will be selected from the remaining applications and will be the one scoring highest on the application form.)
2. Delegates will be selected by the regions on the basis of an application form. The form will include biographical information on the applicant; a brief summary of why they want to attend and how they plan to share their experiences; and the Tennessee 4-H Project Profile (Form 305A) for the subject matter area in which they are applying. (All forms are available on the Web site at 4h.tennessee.edu/forms&materials/).
3. Delegates must be junior high 4-H members (6th-8th grade as of January 1, 2008).
4. Participation in a regional project achievement day is not a requirement for Academic Conference participation.
5. Delegates may not attend in the same subject matter area they participated in last year.
6. Each region is eligible to send two adult volunteer leaders to the conference. Leaders may make an application and should have an interest in one or more of the subject matter areas.

Please do not have members “develop” F305A's when they have done no work to back it up. Cooking pork chops does not make a swine project and pouring a glass of milk does not constitute work in the dairy foods area!

You will receive registration information from your regional office in the near future. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.
