THE LEADERSHIP SERIES … PART SIX
For those of you who attended the 2008 Statewide 4-H Agent In-Service at Henry Horton State Park last spring, you may have had an opportunity to attend “The Shopping Cart” session. “The Shopping Cart” is a decision-making method that will help you and your group make a decision about anything within 45 minutes. And the best part is … everyone gets their say-so! It can be used with very large or small groups. In addition to decision-making, the program introduces leaders to techniques that will make them better facilitators.
Since April, I have introduced “The Shopping Cart” to a number of different organizations, worked out a few kinks and have basically fine-tuned it. It is now ready to share with you! This resource may be found at the following link: 4h.tennessee.edu/inservice/2008/belew/TheShoppingCart.ppt . There are a number of handouts that go with this presentation. Two very important ones are “Multi-Voting” and “Selection Matrix.” Additionally, there are eleven other decision-making techniques available. All of these handouts can be found at the following website: www.utextension.utk.edu/4H/inservice/2008/index.htm
As a result of this activity, 4-H’ers will be better able to answer the following Leadership life skills questions:
Short-term:
| 1. |
I can cooperate and work in a group. |
| 2. |
I help make sure everyone gets an opportunity to say what they think. |
| 3. |
As a member of a committee, I take my job seriously. |
| 4. |
When I am in charge of a group, I treat everyone fairly and equally. |
Intermediate:
| 1. |
I can run a meeting. |
| 2. |
I feel comfortable being a group leader. |
| 3. |
I can give clear directions. |
| 4. |
I like to work with others and help them reach their goals. |
Long-term:
| 1. |
I feel comfortable being responsible for a group. |
This activity was specifically designed for advanced level 4-H members. It works well for adult-level training as well. I hope you find the activity useful. If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions, please contact me - lbelew@utk.edu or 865.974.7239.
