EASTERN REGION PEN-OF-THREE FEEDER CALF SHOW
The 2008 Eastern Region 4-H Pen-of -Three Feeder Calf Show was held this past Thursday, October 23, at the East Tennessee Livestock Center in Sweetwater. There were 16 entries in the show. Each exhibitor competed in a Skillathon contest to test their knowledge and skills of the beef industry. Gage Goddard took first place honors in the junior Skillathon division and Daniel Stafford finished second. Greer Goddard walked away with the top award in the senior Skillathon division and Colleen Brown came in second.
In the pen show, Ross Houston's pen of first place steers was named overall grand champion. Colleen Brown took second place in the steer division, and Ross Houston's other pen finished third. Derek Snoderly's first place pen of heifers received the overall reserve grand champion award. Colleen Brown's heifers came in second while Greer Goddard's heifers were third. Other exhibitors present were Jonathan Summit, Nate Long, Chase Wood, Emily Ivy, Mirinda Smith and Jacob Lay.
Bill Inman, USDA Feeder Calf Grader, served as the show's judge. Inman also interviewed each exhibitor to test their knowledge of their calves. Prior to the presentation of the awards, Inman walked though the barn with the entire group and made his grading comments on each pen of calves.
Alan Bruhin, Sevier County Extension Director, served as show chairman and presented awards. Ross Houston and Derek Snoderly, by being named overall champion and reserve, received Bayer jackets donated by David Thomas, Bayer animal health consultant. Thomas also presented all exhibitors a Bayer cap. Skillathon winners Gage Goddard, Daniel Stafford, Greer Goddard and Colleen Brown each received a cattle sorting stick donated by Shane Williams, Farm Credit Financial Services officer. Dr. Emmit Rawls, UT Extension livestock marketing specialist, donated each exhibitor their choice of a package of calf weaners or ear taggers. Other show sponsors were the Tennessee Cattleman's Association, East Tennessee Livestock Center, Sevier County Livestock Association and Smoky Mountain Feeder Calf Association.
The pens of cattle were then sold at auction at the Premium Feeder Calf Sale in Sweetwater on the following Friday night. The champion pen of steers sold for 1.07 per pound with an average weight of 733 pounds.

INFORMATION ON 4-H MISSION MANDATES
I am pleased, on behalf of the 4-H Mission Mandate co-chairs, to share with you updates regarding SET, Healthy Living and Citizenship. This is an exciting time as we continue our work in these important mission mandate areas. Updates may be found as follows:
Over the years, we occasionally receive questions about where the three mission mandates came from. We are also please to provide you with three different chronologies that provide clear evidence of the very strong and historic work in Science, Engineering, & Technology; Healthy Living; and Citizenship. Please see those documents here: www.national4-hheadquarters.gov/about/4h_programs.htm
We hope that these documents serve, in some way, as a vehicle to strengthen partnerships or open doors and lines of communications.

TENNESSEE DELEGATION TO NATIONAL 4-H CONGRESS
Tennessee will be represented by 35 young people from across the state at the National 4-H Congress, November 28-December 2, in Atlanta, Georgia. The 2008 delegation is anxiously awaiting the "Congress experience." They will participate in a program that includes a visit to Olympic Park, the Coca-Cola Museum, the Atlanta History Center and the Georgia Aquarium. Delegates will attend an international cultural event and tour other sites of interest. They will complete service projects benefitting the Atlanta community and be honored by past Tennessee Congress delegates with a luncheon at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
Tennessee’s delegates to National 4-H Congress were selected as senior level II project winners during the 85th annual Tennessee 4-H Roundup this summer at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. You can see the Tennessee delegation and read a brief bio of their project accomplishments at 4h.tennessee.edu/natcong/. Check out the National 4-H Congress Web site at www.national4-Hcongress.com for additional information on the event.
