2009 4-H YOUTH CORNBREAD COOK-OFF CONTEST

Fourth grade 4-H’ers get out your cast iron skillet and corn meal and get ready to cook! You could win some cold-hard cash! It is time to enter a recipe in the National 4-H Cornbread Cook-off sponsored by Martha White and Lodge Cast Iron. Past winning recipes have been unique, creative and of course very tasty. Last year’s winning recipe was “Justin’s Country Cornbread Dressing” prepared by Justin Crittenden from Decatur, Tennessee.

Enter today by sending in an original recipe. Each recipe must be cooked in Lodge cast iron and prepared with at least one cup of Martha White corn meal or one package of Martha White corn meal mix. Recipes will be judged and ten lucky finalists will be invited to prepare their recipe at the National Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburg, Tennessee on April 25, 2009.

The first place winner of the 4-H Cook-off will win a $400 cash prize. The 4-H teacher and 4-H agent of the winning student will also each receive $50. The second prize winner takes home $200, and the third place contestant will receive $100. The remaining seven finalists each will win $50. All ten finalists receive special gifts from Martha White and Lodge Cast Iron. Also, youth traveling more than 100 miles to the competition will receive $100 travel money.

Mail your recipes by March 2 to Vicki Lofty, 2007 4-H Cornbread Cook-off Contest, 302 Betsy Pack Drive, Jasper, TN 37347. Download a copy of the guidelines and an entry form from 4h.tennessee.edu/ideas08/attach/cornbreadrules09.doc. GET READY FOR THE 2009 TENNESSEE SCIENCE BOWL

The 2009 Tennessee science bowl is a statewide academic competition and a chance for teams of high school students from across the state to represent their schools while matching their wits in math and science. It will take place on February 21, 2009 at Pellissippi State Technical Community College - Main Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, Knoxville, Tennessee. It is sponsored by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, US Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Pellissippi State Technical Community College, and the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Top four teams and civility award winner receive a trophy and a cash award. Teams traveling outside a 60 mile radius of their school may be eligible for travel reimbursement. The winning team from Tennessee will travel to the Department of Energy's National Science Bowl® competition in Washington, D.C. - all expenses paid! At least the top 16 teams at the National Science Bowl each receive a cash award. The top five teams each receive a trophy and additional prizes. In addition, the winner of the civility award receives an award trip and a large trophy.

Who is on a team?
Five outstanding students who know their science and math and aren't afraid to show it! A full team is made up of four students plus an alternate - usually juniors or seniors (but not always!) - and a teacher or parent/volunteer who serves as mentor and coach.

What is the format for the Science Bowl?
The one-day statewide competition is played in a question-and-answer format where the two teams competing are asked a question, and the first to buzz in gets to answer it. The competition consists of two phases: the preliminary round-robin and the final single elimination contests. Teams first play in the round-robin competition to determine finalists for the playoffs. Teams are placed randomly in divisions and play against the teams within their division. The top two teams in each division then advance to the single elimination competitions.

Who is the competition?
You could be competing against teams from any school in the state of Tennessee. Schools can have more than one team (if space allows). And no school is too small. Everyone is eligible and encouraged to compete. In 2008, 60 teams had an action-packed day in February, with Oak Ridge High School claiming victory. Farragut High School's Team 1 came in second place, Farragut High School's Team 2 placed third, and Houston High School was fourth. West Knox Home School Academic Team won the civility award. And just like in any competition, the same schools don't always win. That's why they play the game!

What subjects do the questions cover?

* Astronomy
* Biology
* Chemistry
* Physics
* Earth Science
* General Science
* Mathematics
