MID-SOUTH FAIR 4-H CAREER PURSUIT

The Mid-South Fair, Memphis, is providing an opportunity for 4-H members to participate in an activity called 4-H Career Pursuit.

The objectives are to encourage 4-H members to. . .

1. Become aware of and promote interest in career opportunities in agriculture, environmental and home economics related fields.
2. Study occupational characteristics, requirements, compensations, satisfactions and outlook.
3. Assess their own abilities, personalities, characteristics, values and interest.
4. Prepare for the reality of a job application and interview situation in terms of appearance, poise, communication skills and knowledge.

4-H members from five states (Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee) will be participating in the finals at the Mid-South Fair. Each state may have three participants.

Tennessee's three participants will be selected as follows:

1. All Level I & Level II participants in a 4-H Roundup awards program which includes an interview as part of the selection process, are eligible to apply. In addition, senior 4-H members (9-12th grade as of January 1 of the current year) having completed a certified workforce preparation/career exploration program on the county, multi-county and/or regional levels are eligible to apply. Participants must document the completion of resume writing and mock interview exercises. A certification form must be completed by the participant and signed by the 4-H agent.
2. Eligible members who wish to apply will prepare a resume and submit three (3) copies to Steve Sutton, Extension Specialist, State 4-H Office, 2621 Morgan Circle, Room 205, Knoxville, TN 37996-4510 by August 15, 2008. A cover letter should accompany the resume explaining the applicant's perception of the job and their qualifications for the job.
3. Participants should identify and describe a career from the following list, develop a resume and prepare for an interview in the selected area. The information on the resume should be realistic, but does not have to be actual experiences. This is a "pretend" resume so you can create experiences that would prepare you for the career you choose.
