At the 2002 Academic Conference, the plant science project volunteered at the Florence Chrittenton Agency, which is a residential program for females in crisis or at risk, including adolescents, pregnant teens, mothers, etc. The 4-H'ers learned how to mulch and other landscape management activities. Several 4-H'ers commented that this project inspired them to want to volunteer more, and one said, "I think I might be able to work on my own lawn, instead of someone else doing it."
