At
Jo Byrns School in Robertson County, the 4-H LifeLinks peer leaders wanted
to do something to help the first graders in their school learn to read.
The teens went to the four first grade classrooms and talked with the
children about reading and how fun it can be. They read a Berenstein Bears
book and passed out candy. Each first grader got a book of his or her
own. The children took their books home to read with their parents.
The next day, the peer leaders returned to the classrooms. They read another book and ate cake with the students. If a child brought a note from his or her parents saying they had read the new book at home, LifeLinks donated a book to the school's library in that child's honor. That way, the peer leaders said, the entire school could benefit and have more books to read. The project received many positive comments from students, teachers, and parents. One first grade boy summed it up this way: "This was way more fun than other stuff. I really like my book and my candy. I liked that girl that read to us, too."
