The Monroe County Honor Club spent several months planting and maintaining two historic gardens, one at the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum and one at Fort Loudoun. Their goal was to educate visitors to these landmarks about farming practices of the Charokee and the English settlers in the 18th Century. Some of the 4-H'ers also took part in reenactments, and the park ranger and museum director used the gardens as an interpretive learning tool. Through their service, the 4-H'ers learned about heirloom seeds, natural fertilizers and pest repellants, Cherokee and English farming practices, the importance of consistency, and much more. One 4-H'er commented, "I never thought that much about how different the Indians grew their food. I learned a lot and appreciate history a lot more." The Honor Club put together a scrapbook of their project. Follow the links at the bottoms of the next few pages to see their service story.
