Engineering/Safety Science Project

In this project, you can learn about all sorts of things, from bicycles and lawn mowers to leaf blowers and tractors. How can you use your engineering and safety skills to help the community? Here are a few ideas!

  • have a free car wash for senior citizens
  • use a car wash as a fundraiser for a worthy cause
  • lead an automotive project group for younger 4-H'ers
  • have a rubber and battery pick up drive
  • sponsor St. Jude's Bike-a-thon in your community
  • read Curious George Rides a Bike to first graders to teach them about bike safety
  • sponsor a poster contest for elementary students to promote bike safety and hang the posters all over town
  • assist with a Bicycle Rodeo
  • use your bike to run errands for elderly neighbors
  • have a spring bicycle readiness day--help kids in your town get their bikes washed, tires aired, chains oiled, etc., to get ready for summer
  • help kindergarteners use elastic and velcro to make pant-leg holders to keep their cuffs from tangling in the bike chain
  • host a 4-H Bicycle Safety Fair
  • build a bike trail in your community
  • sponsor a bike repair workshop
  • lead an petroleum power project group for younger 4-H'ers
  • help lower income people repair their cars, lawn mowers, etc.
  • fix and sell old lawnmowers to benefit a charity
  • mow lawns for elderly or disabled people
  • mow/bush hog a field for a church, community center, or other organization
  • plow a community garden plot at a nursing home, group home, housing project, or neighborhood
  • sponsor a "safety camp"
  • use your car to run errands for elderly neighbors
  • teaching wintering sessions
  • teach school safety rules to Kindergarteners
  • sponsor a Safe Halloween project
  • lead a community-wide safety search, where you look for safety violations and dangerous situations
  • provide first-aid kits to Little League teams
  • promote the use of safety gear for bicycling, roller blading, skateboarding, and other activities
  • sponsor a farm safety day
  • have a grill safety seminar during a cooking class
  • perform fire safety skits for elementary students
  • organize older youth to serve as playground monitors at local schools or parks
  • help keep play areas clean and safe
  • pass out prevention information
  • help promote the "Click It or Ticket" campaign for seat belt use
