A RESOLUTION

To proclaim and recognize that Tennessee 4-H Congress is supporting an emphasis in Tennessee to reconnect young people to the exploration and enjoyment of nature, also called the “No Child Left Inside” initiative.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE 2009 TENNESSEE 4-H CONGRESS:

      WHEREAS, over the past 20 years, young people’s time spent playing outdoors has been cut in half, while the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled and the adolescent obesity rate has tripled; and,

      WHEREAS, the American Academy of Pediatrics has declared that available free time is essential to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth; and,

      WHEREAS, numerous studies have shown that young people who participate in outdoor recreational activities are healthier, do better in school, have better social skills and self-image, and lead more fulfilled lives; and,

      WHEREAS, because farms, towns, cities, wildlife, forests, green spaces and agriculture are all interrelated, that agricultural literacy be a component of any “No Child Left Inside” initiative; and,

      WHEREAS, every young person should have the opportunity to swim, fish, hunt, hike, and camp outdoors;

      THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the 4-H Senators and Representatives of this 62nd Tennessee 4-H Congress do hereby proclaim and affirm their commitment to an emphasis to reconnect young people to the exploration and enjoyment of nature in the state of Tennessee.

      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of Joint Resolution No. 0001 be forwarded to Governor Phil Bredesen and the state district attorneys.
