Tennessee 4-H Awards and Recognition Handbook

GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR 4-H SCHOLARSHIPS​ ​

These regulations apply to all scholarships unless indicated otherwise under the specific scholarship.​ ​ ​
​1. Scholarships are open to all Tennessee 4-H members regardless of previous awards won.
​2. Recipients must be a Tennessee 4-H member.
​3. Applicants will complete an online Tennessee 4-H college scholarship application and submit it to the state 4-H office using the process indicated. The online application form is available at https://4hscholarship.tennessee.edu.           
​4. Applications are due on the date announced by the county Extension office and must be submitted to the state 4-H office no later than May 1, unless otherwise indicated.
​5. Scholarships will be awarded on January 1, following the successful completion of one quarter or semester of college or schoolwork. Successful completion is defined as a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 grading system.
​6. Selection of the scholarship recipients (unless otherwise stipulated) will be made by a scholarship selection committee.
​7. The value of scholarships funded by an endowment will be determined annually according to the availability of funds.
​8.

Recipients will be announced at State 4-H Roundup.

 

​A. African American Scholarship
DONOR: African American Extension Staff Members
​1. Open only to African American 4-H members.
​2. Applicant must have been accepted at any college, university, technical or trade school in any field or major. Application may be made prior to the student's freshman year in college or any following year of college work.
​3. Scholarship will be awarded prior to the beginning of the quarter or semester of college or schoolwork.
​4. Scholarship criteria:
​a. Financial need - 40%
​b. 4-H experiences, including leadership and citizenship - 30%
​c. Other activities (community involvement, school, etc.) - 20%
​d.

Academic achievement - 10%

 

B. Alpha Gamma Rho 4-H Agricultural Scholarship
DONOR: UTK Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity
​ ​ ​1. Applicant must have been accepted as a freshman in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
​2. Scholarship criteria:
​a. 4-H agricultural projects and activities - 50%
​b. Academic achievement - 30%
​c.

Financial need - 20%

 

​C. Alan Peace Memorial Scholarship
DONOR: An endowment established by friends and relatives in memory of Alan Peace.
​1. Limited to 4-H members in Cannon, Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Morgan, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Scott, Smith, Trousdale and White counties.
​2. Applicants must have been accepted at any college, university, technical or trade school in any field of study.
​3. Scholarship criteria:
​a. Experiences in 4-H projects - 40%
​b. Financial need - 30%
​c. Academic achievement - 30%
​4.

Applications are to be submitted to the state 4-H office no later than March 1 of the current year.

 

​D. Arthur Wells Memorial Scholarship
DONOR: Family and friends in memory of Arthur Wells.
​ ​
​1. Open to Western Region 4-H members, who have been accepted as a freshman at any college, university, technical or trade school in any field of study.
​2. Applicants must be actively involved in citizenship activities and projects.
​3. Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of experiences and accomplishments in:
​a. Citizenship projects and activities - 60%
​b. Community improvement projects - 20%
​c.

Academic achievement- 20%

 

​E. Charline Hamilton Powell Scholarship
DONOR: An endowment fund established by friends and relatives in memory of Charline Hamilton Powell.
​1. Applicant must have been accepted for admission at any college, university, technical or trade school in any field of study.
​2. Application may be made prior to the student's freshman or sophomore year in school.
​3. Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of experiences and accomplishments in:
​a. 4-H sheep project - 40%
​b. Other 4-H experiences, including leadership and citizenship - 30%
​c. Academic achievement - 20%
​d.

​​Other activities (community involvement, school, church, etc.) - 10%

 

​F. ​​Earl M. Knepp Agricultural Scholarship
DONOR: An endowment fund established by friends and relatives in memory of Earl M. Knepp.
​1. Applicant must have been accepted for admission at any college, university, technical or trade school in any field of study.
​2. Scholarship criteria:
​a. Dairy and/or agricultural engineering 4-H projects - 40%
​b. Leadership and citizenship - 30%
​c. Academic achievement - 20%
d​.

Other activities (community involvement, school, church, etc.) - 10%

 

​G. Farm Credit Services of Mid-America Scholarship - will not be available in 2019
DONOR: Farm Credit Services of Mid-America
​1. Applicants must have been accepted as a freshman or be currently enrolled as a student in good standing at any college, university, technical or trade school in any field of study.
​2. Preference will be given to incoming freshman applicants.
​3. Scholarship  criteria:
​a. Experiences and achievement in the applicant's main 4-H project - 40%
​b. 4-H leadership and citizenship experiences - 30%
​c. Academic achievement - 20%
​​d.

Financial need - 10%

 

H. FarmHouse Agricultural Scholarship
DONOR: The University of Tennessee FarmHouse Fraternity
​1. Applicants must have been accepted as a freshman in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
​2. Selection of the recipient will be made by a committee appointed by the University of Tennessee FarmHouse Fraternity.
​3. Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the youth's experiences in:
​a. Agricultural projects and activities - 50%
​b. Academic achievement - 30%
​c.

Financial need - 20%

 

​I. Gilbert N. Rhodes Agricultural Scholarship
DONOR: Endowment fund established by friends and relatives in memory of Gilbert N. Rhodes.
​1. Applicant must have been accepted by, or currently be a student in good standing in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville or an agriculture major in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Martin.
​2. Scholarship criteria:
​a. 4-H plant and soil projects - 40%
​b. Other 4-H experiences (including citizenship and leadership) - 30%
​c. Academic achievement - 20%
​d.

Other community activities - 10%

 

J. G.L. Herrington Agricultural Scholarship
DONOR: A fund established from the state 4-H club account in memory of G. L. Herrington, State 4-H Club Leader, 1919-1947.
​ ​
​1. Must have been accepted by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for admission as a freshman in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
​2. Applicants will be high school seniors at the time of application.
​3. Applications are due in the state 4-H office no later than March 1.
​4. Scholarship criteria:
​a. 4-H record - 40%
​b. Financial need - 30%
​c. Academic scholarship - 30%
​5. Selection of the recipient will be made by the scholarship committee of the University of Tennessee College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, based upon recommendations of a committee appointed annually by the dean of UT Extension.
​6. The scholarship will be paid in equal amounts for two semesters. Payments are to be withheld if the recipient fails to do creditable work.
​7.

The recipient will receive a scholarship to attend State 4-H Roundup.

 

K. Harold Robbins Agricultural Scholarship
DONOR: An endowment fund established by friends in memory of Harold C. Robbins.
​ ​
​1. Applicant must have a farm background.
​2. Must have been accepted by or currently be a student in good standing at the University of Tennessee College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
​3. Preference will be given to residents of Rhea, Pickett, Overton and Fentress counties (in descending order), and to applicants who have not received this scholarship. If further consideration is necessary, members from other Tennessee counties will be considered.
​4. Scholarship criteria:
​a. 4-H activities - 40%
​b. Financial need - 30%
​c.

Academic achievement - 30%

 

​L. Hamilton-Brown Scholarship
DONOR: A fund established by friends in memory of Frank Brown and Mary Frances Hamilton.
​1. Limited to 4-H’ers from Bledsoe, Bradley, Coffee, Franklin, Grundy, Hamilton, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Moore, Polk, Rhea, Sequatchie, VanBuren and Warren counties.
​2. Must have been accepted at any college, university, technical or trade school in any field of study.
​3. Scholarship criteria:
​a. Experiences in 4-H projects - 40%
​b. Financial need - 30%
​c.

Academic achievement - 30%

 

​M. Lovelace-McKinney Scholarship
DONOR: A fund established by the estate of Inez Lovelace
​ ​
​1. Must have been accepted as a freshman at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Martin, or Chattanooga and must pursue a major in Human Ecology/Human Environmental Sciences or Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
​2. Preference shall be given to 4-H members who are interested in a career with Extension.
​3. Scholarship criteria:
​a. 4-H experiences - 40%
​b. Academic achievement - 30%
​c. Financial need - 30%
​4.

The recipient will receive a $3,000 scholarship to be paid in equal amounts for two semesters. The scholarship is renewable for three additional years if recipient maintains a 3.0 grade point average.

 

​N. Mary Basinger Elliott Memorial Scholarship
DONOR: A fund established by John Basinger, Iris Mustapick and Steve Wilson in memory of Mary Basinger Elliott.
​ ​
​1. Must have been accepted at any college, university, technical or trade school in any field or major.
​2. Limited to 4-H members from Cannon, Rutherford and McMinn counties.
​3. Applicants must be a Tennessee 4-H member and graduating high school senior.
​4. Scholarship criteria:
​a. 4-H experiences - 40%
​b. Academic achievement - 30%
​c.

Financial need - 30%

 

​O. Mary Stanfill Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship
DONOR: An endowment fund established by friends in memory of Mary Stanfill.
​ ​
​1. Applicant must have been accepted as a freshman or currently enrolled as a student in good standing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Martin, or Chattanooga in Family and Consumer Sciences.
​2. Preference will be given to members from Bledsoe, Bradley, Coffee, Franklin, Grundy, Hamilton, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Moore, Polk, Rhea, Sequatchie, VanBuren and Warren counties. If further consideration is necessary, members from other Tennessee counties will be considered.
​3. Scholarship criteria:
​a. 4-H family and consumer sciences projects - 40%
​b. Financial need - 30%
​c.

Academic achievement - 30%

 

​P. Mary Stanfill Memorial Scholarship
DONOR: A fund established by the estate of Mary Stanfill.
​ ​
​1. Applicant must have been accepted as a freshman or currently enrolled as a student in good standing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Martin, or Chattanooga in Family and Consumer Sciences.
​2. Scholarship criteria:
​a. ​​4-H family and consumer sciences projects - 40%
​b. Financial need - 30%
​c.

Academic achievement - 30%

 

​Q. Richard Shadden Memorial Scholarship
DONOR: A fund established by friends in memory of Richard Shadden.
​ ​
​1. Applicant must have been accepted as a freshman at any college/university.
​2. Open to 4-H members from the "Upper Eight" counties of the Eastern Region with preference given first to members from Washington County and second to members from Carter, Greene, Hancock, Johnson, Sullivan and Unicoi counties.
​3. The scholarship awardee will not be the recipient of any other scholarship benefit.
​4. Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
​a. Member's 4-H record - 40%
​b. Financial need - 30%
​c.

Academic achievement - 30%

 

​R. Stephen McNeil Memorial Scholarship
DONOR: The family of Steve McNeil
​ ​
​1. Applicant must have been accepted as a freshman at any college/university.
​2. Scholarship criteria is on the basis of experiences and accomplishments in:
​a. 4-H animal science projects (horse, beef, dairy, goat, poultry, swine) - 40%
​b. Other 4-H experiences (including leadership and citizenship) - 30%
​c. Academic achievement - 15%
​d.

Other activities (community involvement, school, church) - 15%

 

​S. TEAFSC Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship
DONOR: Tennessee Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
​ ​
​1. Applicant must have been accepted as a freshman at any college/university and plan to major in family and consumer sciences.
​2. Scholarship criteria is on the basis of experiences and accomplishments in:
​a. Family and consumer sciences programs (4-H and other) - 30%
​b. Other activities (community, school, church, etc.) - 10%
​c. Financial need - 20%
​d. Career aspirations - 10%
​e.

Academic achievement - 30%

 

T. TFGA Mary B. Cooper Scholarship
DONOR: The TFGA Mary B. Cooper Honorary Scholarship Endowment Fund established by the Tennessee Feed and Grain Association (TFGA) in honor of Mary B. Cooper. Mrs. Cooper is the retired executive secretary of TFGA.
​ ​
​1. Applicant must have been accepted for admission at any accredited college, university technical or trade school.
​2. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing a career in agriculture or ag related fields.
​3. Scholarship criteria:
​a. 4-H experience with emphasis on leadership and citizenship - 30%
​b. Must have a  GPA of 3.0 or more preferred) - 30%
​c. Community, school and/or church involvement - 20%
​d. Financial need - 20%
​4.

The recipient will receive a one-time scholarship of $500 or more subject to availability of funds.

 

​U. Tennessee Farm Bureau Health Plans Nursing Scholarship
DONOR: Tennessee Farm Bureau Health Plans
​ ​
​1. Open only to Tennessee 4-H members pursuing a degree or certification in nursing.
​2. Applicants must have been accepted at any college, university, technical or trade school in the field of nursing. Application may be made prior to the student's first year in post-secondary education in the pursuit of a nursing degree/certification. Scholarship is for $1,250; up to eight (8) scholarships are available per year. Recipients may reapply a second time.
​3. Scholarship criteria:
​a. Resident of a rural community - 10%
​b. Leadership and citizenship - 10%
​c. Academic achievement - 20%
​d. Financial need - 50%
​e.

Other activities (community involvement, school, church, etc.) - 10%

 

​V. Troy and Susie Johnson Scholarship
DONOR: An endowment fund established by Rita Johnson Casey in memory of her parents.
​1. Open to Western Region 4-H members with preference given first to members from Chester County and second to members from McNairy County and third to members from other Western Region counties.
​2. Must have been accepted at any college, university, technical or trade school in any field of study.
​3. Members may apply prior to their first or second year of college.
​4. Scholarship criteria is on the basis of experiences and accomplishments in:
​a. 4-H projects and activities - 40%
​b. Leadership and citizenship - 30%
​c. Academic achievement - 20%
​d.

Other activities (community involvement, school, church, etc.) - 10%

 

​W. UTK Collegiate 4-H Scholarship
DONOR: University of Tennessee, Knoxville Collegiate 4-H
​1. Applicant must have been accepted as a student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
​2. Preference will be given to applicants planning to enroll in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
​3. Scholarship criteria:
​a. Member's 4-H record - 50%
​b. Financial need - 30% ​
​c.

Academic achievement - 20%

 

​X. W.B. and Imogene Kyker Agricultural Scholarship
DONOR: W.B. and Imogene Kyker Endowment Fund
​1. Applicant must have been accepted as a student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville or the University of Tennessee at Martin in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources or the School of Agriculture.
​2. Application may be made prior to the freshman or sophomore year.
​3. Preference will be given to freshmen and residents of Blount and Sevier counties. If additional consideration is needed, upper classmen and residents of other Tennessee counties will be eligible.
​4. Scholarship criteria:
​a. Member's 4-H record - 40%
​b. Financial need - 30%
​c. Academic achievement - 30%
