Dairy Judging

Dairy cattle judging has long been an important part of dairy farming and breeding. The goal is to identify cows with excellent type conformation—animals that combine strong milk production with desirable physical traits. Through the Tennessee 4-H Dairy Judging Program, youth learn how to evaluate dairy cattle by observing, comparing, and making accurate, fact-based decisions.

Participants develop a clear understanding of how type relates to production traits, such as sound feet and legs or well-attached udders. In addition to evaluation skills, giving oral reasons teaches youth to organize their thoughts, communicate effectively, and build confidence. The contest offers both practical learning and personal growth, connecting young people to the science and art of dairy cattle evaluation.

About the Contest

This contest is open to 4-H members in the 9th to 12th grade, as of January 1st of the current year. The top four senior teams from each region will advance to the state contest. Please check the regional calendar for the exact date and location.

  • Teams consist of three or four members.
  • The top three individual scores are combined for the team total.

Teams will evaluate six classes of dairy cattle based on structure, mammary system, and other production traits. Participants also present three sets of oral reasons to explain their placings and demonstrate understanding of sound dairy evaluation principles.

METHOD FOR BREAKING TIES:

  1. If tied for an award, the contestant or team having the highest reason score will be listed first.
  2. If still tied, the contestant or team with the highest score in the tiebreaker class will be listed first. The official judges will designate the tiebreaker class(es) at the beginning of the contest.
  3. If still tied, for a team award, the team whose alternate’s score is highest shall be listed first.

The Tennessee 4-H Dairy Judging Contest is usually held during the Tennessee State Fair in August.
