Digesting Facts! Hey there! It’s Kristen Wearbon, UT Extension intern, once again! I have worked on a variety of 4-H activities and lesson plans in my intern experience this summer, and it’s been very rewarding. Recently, I submitted several lesson plans for review on the topic of digestion. I must say, I learned as much as the 4-H’ers will when they participate in these future lessons! Digesting Facts Lesson Excerpt: Did you know that your liver, pancreas, and gallbladder play an active role in digestion? Me neither! After you chew your food, it goes down your esophagus into your stomach. There, your stomach receives enzymes and acids from your liver and pancreas. After the food in your stomach has been broken down, it will travel through your small and large intestines. The gallbladder pushes bile into the small intestines, where it helps food further break down into protein, carbs, and fat. Be on the lookout for these lessons to come out in the new Healthy Living Curriculum that will be available this fall. 4-H members will have the opportunity to simulate peristalsis (look that term up) with oatmeal and pantyhose!
